I’m Sam Lustig, the founder of Hedgerow Media Group, a corporate photography studio based in Philadelphia.
The name comes from Hedgerow Lane in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I spent my childhood summers at my grandparents’ house. The Osage trees along the lane dropped big, bumpy green fruits that looked exactly like brains. It was strange and wonderful. We like strange and wonderful.
For a long time it was just me and a camera, and that was enough. But as the clients got bigger, with national companies, multi-day events, a few hundred headshots to shoot in a single afternoon, and rooms that all needed covering at once, it became clear that one person, no matter how early he shows up, has limits. Hedgerow Media Group is my answer to that.
Hedgerow is a small, tight team of photographers I trust, built out of necessity so that no client is ever depending on a single point of failure. If a job needs three cameras, we bring three. If someone can’t make it, there’s a backup who shoots to the same standard, so your day goes ahead exactly as planned. We move efficiently, we cover more ground, and we hold all of it to the same clean, honest standard I built my name on. The scale changed. The care didn’t.
I’ve spent years photographing real people in real moments: business professionals, university graduates, corporate teams, and just about everyone in between. The work is clean and honest. Confident, but it doesn’t try too hard. You’ll notice it in the headshots, in the event coverage, in the way people actually look at ease in front of the lens. That isn’t an accident. I show up early, I listen more than I talk, and I care about getting the details right, especially the ones nobody notices until they’re wrong.
When I’m not working, I’m usually somewhere off the grid. I love traveling and living out of my Honda Pilot camper on the road with my partner, Emily, while our cats, Nadia, Lefty, and Scooter, hold down the house and steal into the lap of anyone who’ll sit near them. I’m an avid rock climber and have climbed all over the country, and I’ve recently taken up surfing and mountain biking, surfing being one of the hardest things I’ve ever tried to get good at. There’s a theme that runs through all of it, personal and professional: I don’t much like leaving a challenge unfinished.
